The Monkey’s Paw story starts with a family spending time together. A father and son are playing chess while the mom is watching nearby. An old friend, Sergeant Major Morris, of the father, Mr. White, stops by for a visit after a long time away. He tells of his time in India. The dad asks about the story of the Monkey’s Paw that the Sergeant had mentioned before, and he tries to change the subject. But he insists. So, he tells the story of how the Paw gives the men three wishes. But you need to be careful. The wishes do not always work out the way you want them to. He says that he and another man has already used their three wishes, the other man using his last wish to ask for death. The sergeant tries to destroy the paw, and Mr. White saves it. That night after the sergeant leaves, Mr. White does not want to make a wish. His son suggests he wishes for enough money to pay off the house. So, Mr. White wishes for two hundred pounds and goes to bed. Later the next day, a stranger comes to the house; he says he is from their son’s employment. They let the parents know that their son has died in an accident at work but that they would not take responsibility and only pay two hundred pounds as compensation. Mr. & Mrs. White refuses to believe that the paw worked. Several days passed after the funeral. Mrs. White begs her husband to use the paw to wish their son back to life. Afraid of what might happen, he refuses at first. When he does comply with her wish, there is a knock at the door, then another, and another, and then increasingly. Mrs. White tries to rush to open it. Mr. White holds her back and tries to reason with her. Begs her not to open the door because you do not know what will be on the other side. After she breaks free and just before she opens the door, Mr. White grabs the paw and makes one more wish. As Mrs. White opens the door, nothing is there.

The moral of this story is to be careful of what you wish for. If you are content and happy with your life, why wish for more? In stories that have seemingly innocent wishes involved, they usually become more outlandish and dangerous. Being able to get whatever you want leads to greediness and unhappiness.

This story is about a man named Mr. White. His friend comes over and starts talking about a Paw that can grant wishes. Mr. White asks if he can have it and the friend was a bit hesitant on giving it to him. He told him that the wishes are tricky. Mr. White didn’t care. So the man leaves and Mr. White makes his first wish. He wished to get some money. Well, after the wish a person comes from an insurance policy and they inform Mr. White and his wife that their son had died in an accident at work. And that they will be getting some money. 200 pounds. Wish is exactly what the father wished for. Knowing this he knew the consequences of his wish. The mother couldn’t take it and was very hurt. Late at night before they both went to sleep the wife cried to the husband to wish for their son to be alive again. She begged and begged. Finally he said it “I wish my son was alive again” and with that they went to bed. When there was a knock on the door the mother wanted to answer but the father didn’t let her. The father was very scared to not know what he wished for. His son could be a monster. Mr. White was rushing to find the paw so he could make his final wish. Just as the wife opened the door the husband had already made his wish. That wish was to wish his son away.

The Monkey Paw is a classic horror short story, it revolves around a cursed monkey’s paw that can grant its owner’s three wishes, but with these wishes comes a horrible consequence. One of the strengths I would say is the story has its ability to build suspense and tension. But, some may say that the story relies too much on coincidence and fate. Their will always be someone who likes or dislikes something. In this story and because of the wishes the characters have no control over their own destinies. But I can say that this story is a well-crafted horror story. While it may have some flaws, its ability to create suspense and evoke fear makes it a classic of the genre and it’s time.
