Arriving in Istanbul

The gateway to not one but two continents, Istanbul (or Constantinople as it was originally known) sits astride Europe and Asia on the Bosphorus. It is still an internationally important trading city and port, as well as home to some of the most breath-taking ancient buildings, mosques and churches in the world, thriving souqs and markets, and a rich cultural scene that celebrates music, art and theatre.

Book a flight to Istanbul with Qatar Airways and you’ll quickly see why this metropolis has been a hub of civilisation for thousands of years. This is where various culture mix. From the Roman remains to the dazzling beauty of Saint Sophia, the modern port to the ancient alleys, Istanbul is one of those eclectic locations you never forget and always return to.

Tourist attractions

Most of the main attractions are located in and around Sultanahmet-Old City, which is effectively the Constantinople of old. Around Sultanahmet Square you’ll find the finest of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman-period attractions, including Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque), and the Basilica Cistern. Further out from the square you’ll find the Church of St Savior in Chora, which is home to some of the most extraordinarily beautiful frescoes and mosaics. Next to the church are some beautifully preserved Theodosian Walls.

North of the peninsula of the old city is Galata, easily by the landmark Galata Tower. Head down to the waterfront area of Karaköy and you’ll find the Istanbul Modern gallery, home to some of the best exhibitions of contemporary Turkish art.

A rather unusual visitor attraction and one that has gained popularity in recent years are the tulip displays in Sultanahmet Park and Gülhane Park in Sultanahmet. These beautiful flowers originate from Turkey, and are a symbol of the Netherlands, where they are celebrated in a festival in early April at Emirgan Park, and can be seen throughout the city. Finally, a visit to Eyüp will introduce you to the city’s holiest Islamic shrine.
