Make a lesson plan for kindergarten English

Objectives/ Learning Targets

Both of these come from unpacking the standard and identifying a knowledge and/or skill you are teaching in today’s lesson.

Students will be able to:  This is your goal for the students by the end of the today’s lesson.

I can statement here:  Student friendly language establishing what they need to know how to do at the conclusion of today’s lesson. We (as well as most administrators) expect this to be posted and stated to the students daily.

Standards and/or

Content Statements

List the standard(s) you will use for this lesson. No more than two standards.

Assessment

How will you assess student learning for this specific lesson?

Pre-Assessment – What data do you have that suggests students are ready for this lesson?

Formative Assessment – How will you assess student progress during the lesson?

Post-Assessment – How will you determine what students learned in the lesson?

How will you score the assessments?  Remember, many formative assessments that you use to measure understanding during the lesson will not be scored items. It is essential that all assessments align with your learning target.

Academic Language & Vocabulary

If something is listed here, it needs to be taught to your students in your procedures.

Academic Language is associated with the standard, the learning target or “I can” statement, and the skills present in today’s lesson.

Vocabulary is associated with the content in today’s lesson and are key terms being practiced.

Intentional Teaching

How will you promote the active and multimodal nature of children’s learning in this lesson?

Describe how you will utilize different approaches to learning that will build on children’s interests, nurture their curiosity, and how you will respond to their own unique styles of learning while scaffolding and challenging them to grow.  Include different approaches to learning such as kinesthetic, visual, and auditory.

Intentional Teaching

How will you promote language and literacy development across interdisciplinary context within this lesson/activity?

Be detailed about how your lesson promotes reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Procedure

This needs to be thorough and detailed enough for a substitute to teach it.

You and Mentor do:

Two behavior guidance expectations:

Beginning

* Lesson intro and hook

* How you will tell students what they are learning today

Middle

* Detailed account of each learning task including differentiation for all learners.

* Formative assessment and scripted questioning connecting back to the learning target at each transition.

End

* Closure and post-assessment measuring today’s learning target.

Students do:

For each “you” do, there should be a concurrent “students do” because all learning should have an active element.

Differentiation Strategies

Address needs of groups and individuals as needed

These strategies ALSO need to be spelled out in your procedures. Please address how you will scaffold for your struggling learners, how you will challenge your high achievers, how you will account for various learning styles, and how you will accommodate any identified learning needs.

Rationale Including Knowledge of Students and

Before & After the Lesson

The rationale is not because the standards tell us to teach it!

Why are you teaching this lesson?  The rationale is not because the standards tell us to teach it!  Rather, what you want students to learn and why.

How does this lesson connect to the previous lesson?

What will students learn next?

What about this lesson is Developmentally Appropriate?

What about this lesson is culturally relevant and promote equity for all students?

Engagement Strategies

What activities in your lesson will keep students engaged and want to learn?
