Annotated Works Cited

Any time you conduct research, you should take notes, record your sources, and ensure they are listed in a Works Cited. For your final summative presentation, you must locate and use at least three (3) resources. You should also strive to locate a variety of source types.

In addition to having your Works Cited, you will also need to annotate three (3) of your sources. In other words, if you have more than three sources, choose those that you feel will best suit this task.

Step 1: What is a works cited list?

My assumption is that many of you have done this before, but I will provide a quick reminder. A Works Cited is a properly formatted list of sources that is included along any task that uses information from a source other than yourself.
Many students use online citation machines, but I highly recommend using the citation tool in Google Docs (Tools ?Citations). The benefit? The Google Doc tool ensures proper formatting; this includes spacing, order of information, alphabetical order of resources, and hanging indent.

Step 2: How do I add annotations, and what do I include?

This is the part that may be new to many of you. An annotated works cited https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1wTITfh2BbmlSB_lEmoX8Kges175TvhjboAbS8Q90I4c/edit#slide=id.p1  (often titled an annotated bibliography) is an opportunity for you to not only summarize your resources but evaluate them in terms of their reliability and relevance. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LYCXno5kwy_Zo_A9Y-rjp64zar7eUZsQzXpAekywV3A/edit

Step 3: Add an example of lateral reading!

Lateral reading is a specific strategy used to explore the reliability of your resource and learn more about where/who is responsible for the information (see video on slide 10 of the annotation works cited Slides presentation).
For at least one (1) annotated entry, explain/map out how you used lateral reading to better understand the source. Please provide specific examples.

ENG4U // Summative Research + Presentation Summative Presentation

Task

Find a topic that you are interested in, conduct research and then convey your findings to your peers in the form of a TED Talk.

Products

An Annotated Bibliography (3 sources)
Research Notes/outline, MLA Works Cited and an 8-10 minute presentation that resembles the TED Talk format

Steps to Follow:

Step 1: Learn more about your topic.  Strive to find two primary sources of knowledge and

experience, rather than just relying on secondary sources.  Ideally you will have a balance of both types of sources. The minimum number of sources is four (4).  All sources need to be reliable and credible (Wikipedia and personal blogs do not count!).

Step 2: Begin putting your learning together into a coherent presentation.  Do not wait until the last

minute to conduct your research and prepare for your presentation.

In order to present, you MUST have submitted the following before the start of your talk:

Detailed research notes
A properly formatted MLA Works Cited
Annotated entries for four of the sources on your MLA Works Cited

In accordance with Continuing Education and OCDSB board policy, you must be prepared to present on your scheduled date or a mark of 0 will be assigned.  If you are legitimately absent, you must present on the day of your return with a medical note outlining your absence.
