Part I: Personal Biography (100 points)

You will examine your own family, friends and community to determine your socialization. Use the following interview guideline, and add any details that further describe your life experiences. You may choose not to write in detail about a painful part of your history. Only share what you feel comfortable sharing. Take the time to be thorough and thoughtful, as you write a personal, narrative response to the questions. (Minimum 3 full pages)

Sample Interview Questions for Personal Biography and Interview:

1. Describe the details of your birth, including who was present and where you were born. (I.e. were you born in a hospital, home birth, premature
and any siblings at the time of your birth, etc.?) Were there any complications that affected you or your primary care givers ability to nurture you
postpartum? Include the age of your parents.
2. What’s the origin of your name? (Are you named for someone?) Do you know what your name means?
3. What is/was your family structure? Where are you in the birth order of siblings if you have siblings? Considering some of the literature on birth
order, how do you think this affected your interaction in the family, especially with your parents? (Clearly, this literature may not be  available to the person you interview so allow them to respond based on their own understanding of the family dynamic).

4. Who was your extended family? Consider aunts, uncles, grandparents etc. that may have been part of your family support circle. How involved in
your early or current growth, development and support were or are they?
5. Did your parent(s) work outside the home when you were growing up? Who was your primary caregiver? What were the child care
arrangements?
6. Describe important family rules/values. How you were disciplined, and who disciplined you? What were/are your feelings toward these discipline
methods.
7. Describe your favorite play activity or past-time when you were a young child. Include where you played and any others who joined you in this
activity.
8. How did you get to school? What did you do after school? Describe a favorite teacher. Why do you remember this favorite teacher? What did
you like/dislike about school?
9. Describe your favorite types of entertainment as a child, such as games sports, books, television programs, radio shows, movies, computers, or
other activities.
10. What chores and responsibilities did you have as a child? This may include pet or livestock care, support of a family business, etc. How do
you think your chores/responsibilities affected the family wellbeing or livelihood
11. .Describe in detail how your family celebrated a family tradition, ritual, custom, or holiday. Why was this an important event in your family? What
values did it pass on to you?
12. Who do you feel had the most influence in your life? Why?
13. Are you now influencing someone in the same way? Why and how do you think you’re an influence in that person’s life? Cite specific instances of
involvement.

14. What are some historical or newsworthy events you remember? (Consider wars, economic recessions/depressions, elections, politicians,
inventions, media events, local or national news) that affected you in some way?
15. .What do you consider to be the biggest differences or challenges for children today compared to when you were growing up? Cite at least two
(2) comparisons.
