We typically communicate very differently in the classroom, at work, at home, and on social media. The same is true for writing; your writing must fit the audience and intended purpose. In academic writing, your audience may be very different from you. They may have different values, beliefs, and life experiences that you must consider when writing to them.

In the reading, “Read the Room! Navigating Social Contexts and Written Texts,” the authors indicate that “effective communication always requires contextual awareness. This is the social side of communication. In order to understand and be understood, one must learn to read the room” (Seely et al. 292). How will you “read the room” in your writing?

After reading and watching the resources for this module, complete the following:

Choose a general topic prompt from the following list. You will use this topic for the first major paper in the class (Paper 1 – Personal Experience). Don’t worry, though; you will work on this paper in manageable steps, and this is just the first step. You aren’t writing a whole paper just yet. For now, just choose an option below that you would like to think more about.

Option 1: Global Experience – Write a personal narrative about a time when you either travelled to a different country or participated in a culturally-immersive experience that introduced you to new cultural norms.  Options for a culturally-immersive experience are:
a wedding for a religion other than your own
a party or celebration specific to a particular culture (a quinceañera, for instance)
a cultural festival (our local Greek or Korean festivals, for instance)
a church service for a religion other than your own
another experience that you approve with your instructor ahead of time

Identify your purpose. The educational purpose set for you in Paper 1 (due in Module 4) is “to practice using narrative writing techniques to support an idea (description, showing vs. telling, etc.), to engage in the writing process, and to participate as a member of an active writing community,” but this is what I want you to get out of completing this assignment. For your purpose, consider what you want readers to get from reading your paper. Do you want them to be informed, entertained, or moved, for instance? Answering this question will determine your purpose.

Choose an audience. Your default audience is your peers, but you can choose a different, more specific audience instead.

Open a Word document. In the Word document, create a numbered list and type your topic, purpose, and audience. (E.g.: 1. Topic: _______(example: Option 2); 2. Purpose: _______ (example: to inform); 3. Audience: ______(example: adult students).)

Below your list, explain how your purpose and audience will affect the way you write about your topic. How will it affect your language? How will it affect the details you include?

Save your Word document. Typing directly into Blackboard is generally not a good idea since your work can get lost. Always save it in a Word document first.

Navigate back to this Discussion Board. In the Discussion Board, click “Create Thread.” Copy and paste what you wrote in the Word document into the textbox, and submit your post.

Read through your peers’ posts and respond to two peers identifying any additional ways their purpose and audience might affect the way in which they write their paper.
