Comparative Analysis on What it is Like to Work for Amazon

Jodi Kantor, Karen Weise, and Grace Ashford’s and Alana Semuels published articles
covering the mistreatment and wrong doings of the multibillion-dollar company, Amazon owned
by Jeff Bezos. Both articles precisely outline the problems within the Amazon company whether
it be benefits, wages, or corruption. Although it is a huge company with over 1 million workers,
both articles were scarce of positive words for this company. There are mentions of how
successful Amazon is, as mentioned in ‘ I Delivered Packages for Amazon and It Was a
Nightmare’, Amazon made three times its profits in the first year of Covid as it did in the year
prior. With that being said no increase in the minimum pay there was given.
In ‘ I Delivered Packages for Amazon and It Was a Nightmare’ written by Jodi Kantor,
Karen Weise, and Grace Ashford (2021), interviews a woman who tells her husband’s
experience while working for Amazon. This interview with Ann Castillo plays as an introduction
on a multitude of sources speaking on Amazon’s corruptness. To summarize Castillo’s case, her
husband was working at the company for 5 years and had to leave due to a serious case of Covid
that gave him extensive brain damage. Following this event, he started receiving disability
checks when one day they unexpectedly halted. This article focuses primarily on the JFK8
located in New York that provides resources to the majority of New York City and surrounding
cities.
In ‘The Amazon That Customers Don’t See’ published by Alana Semuels (2018),
introduces the conversation at hand by telling a personal experience from a Flex driver. It is
important to note that Flex drivers are a privately owned company separated from Amazon but
the relation comes from the fact that they will deliver amazon packages when an Amazon
warehouse has an overload and needs help. Based on the other experiences told in this article,
Amazon’s need of outsources delivery help is common. The irritability of these Flex workers

comes from Amazon’s lack of appreciation and giving towards the help that they need. The
displeasure within the Flex company is very prominent in this article too.
A huge complaint reported in both articles includes parking violations. I was shocked to
learn how common of an issue it is among drivers working in busy cites. A source from ‘ I
Delivered Packages for Amazon and It Was a Nightmare’, reports that Flex drivers would ride
with an extra person in the truck to avoid parking violations. To further explain that one person
would hop out and deliver the package to its parcel and the other person would stay in the truck
and either circle the building or park in temporary spots and continuously move around. This
problem should be handled by the company. And just off the top of my head, with no experience
with delivery, an easy solution would be for drivers to receive some kind of delivery parking
pass. With that same kind of problem coming from both articles and such a big deal made from
both, it makes it worth noting the comparison between these two different experiences.
