Plot:

Character

3. What is the purpose of the minor characters? Do they act as a foil to the main character? Does
the author use them to illustrate the behavior and interactions of the main character? Do these
characters represent specific attitudes, beliefs, or cultural ideals?
 

Setting
1. Do you think the setting is important to the story’s development? If the setting was different,
would the outcome of the story be different or the character’s action be different?
2. Is the setting symbolic for something else? Is the time, place, and atmosphere important to the
theme of the story or the author’s message?
 

Point of View
1. Who tells the story? Does the point of view change during the story? If so, how does this change
the author’s message?
2. If this story were told from a different point of view, would it change the story’s impact?
 

Symbolism
1. What symbols, if any, does the author use in this story? What are these symbols? How do these
symbols help you to understand the author’s message or theme?

1. What is the theme of this story? Does the theme confirm your beliefs or challenge your
beliefs? Explain why.
