What is your first language? What is your heritage language?

to start of, I speak 5 different language.  My very first language is Berber(Kabyle/amazigh)

I come from Algeria. my 2nd language would be Algerian arabic and then French

I also speak middle easter arabic.

lastly I speak English.

My heritage language is berber which come from Norton Africa. mainly is spoke in Norton Algerian, Morocco and Tunisia. We are berbers( Amazigh)

What is something that you love about your language?

I love the berber language because it is something not a lot of people speak. Berber languages, also called Amazigh languages, family of languages in the Afro-Asiatic language phylum. As they are the most homogeneous division within Afro-Asiatic, the Berber languages have often been referred to as a single languagein the past (especially in the tradition of French scholarship). Berber languages are spoken today by some 14 million people, mostly in scattered enclaves found in the Maghrib, a large region of northern Africa

do  you have any difficulties or challenges as an international student/EL student?

When I first moved to America I did have difficulties but not as much. I didn’t really speak any English. I first moved here when I was in the 6th grade. Thankfully I had the best teachers and amazing friends who have helped me learn English in the best way possible and as fast as possible.

Have you experienced any prejudice or bias on campus or in the community?

when I was little of course people maybe would be mean to me because I didn’t speak as well of English but not anymore. I want this community to be aware that we all come from a different place/country and that is why America is beautfuil. Is to always be kind to others and never try to be higher above anyone because only God is higher.

What do you wish this community to do and better support you?

Not me personally but I wish for this community and the rest of the world to be kinder of one and another and to always try to understand the person and help them in a best way possible. even if someone doesn’t speak English doesn’t make them less of a person. instead to help them and be patient with them.

Any other thing you want to share?

I know that I am proud to be a Kabyle women. I am also proud to speak so many different language to connect with people from different cultures and to learn about their languages. I think language is beautfuil and we all speak the language of love and kindness.
