8. What are the qualities of a good writer? What are the qualities…

8. What are the qualities of a good writer? What are the qualities of a good piece of writing?

9.  Read/review the excerpt “Madman, Architect, Carpenter, and Judge.”  Then in your journal create a list of EACH character’s personality traits (characteristics) AND what job or responsibility they have in the writing process.

10.  Describe what your current writing process is like. What steps do you usually take when writing an essay? Are there any special rituals you go through? For example, do you always have to brew a pot of coffee or eat a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream before you get started? Do you tend to start working on your ideas immediately after seeing the assignment and do some prewriting? Or do you always wait until the last minute to write your essay and stay up all night to complete your draft? Also explain whether or not you feel your writing process has been successful in the past. Do you think there are any changes you should make to it? If so, what changes do you think might be helpful?

11.  What are “cultural assumptions”? Write a quick definition

12. What are some markers of identity that we are born with? Again, make a quick list.

13.  Betty S. Flowers explains the writing process through the characters, the Madman, Architect, Carpenter, and Judge and each is responsible for a particular stage in that process. Based on her description, explain which character you feel currently dominates your writing and why, providing any specific examples that you can think of. Also, which character(s) do you think needs to do more work to help you get successfully through to the end of the semester?

14. What count as cultural markers of identity?  Create a list.

15. What are some aspects of school culture in particular? Consider high school or college in your response. Either create a list or do some freewriting.

16.  Reflection on Assumption 02 Identity is shaped by culture.

What are the consequences–both positive and negative–of recognizing that identity is a process of acculturation? In other words, how does your absorption of the culture around you potentially shape who you are and how you live, either for the better or the worse? You may want to consider your response in the previous class about the kind of culture you find at school, particularly high school and/or college and how that is impacting and/or did impact your identity.

17.  Assumption 03:  Identity is shaped by personal choices.

What might be some personal choices one makes about identity?  Make a quick list.
