Here is a breakdown of this two part-assignment:

(1)  Body Paragraphs: Biography (4ish body paragraphs using credible sources)

Who is this artist? Where are they from, and what is their story? What inspired this person to become an artist?
What events or experiences in the artist’s life influenced their work? Consider the audience here (as always!). Choose the most interesting information for your audience (skip the boring, résumé stuff, or awards we’ve never heard of!)
What is the scope and message of their artwork as a whole?
What powerful quotes did the artist share in interviews that explain their artistic worldview? What did they say, or what did you learn about their art through research, that illuminated their work for you, as a viewer?
Their art: Summarize their work more generally: (not the specific piece you chose, but their work as a whole) How would you describe it to someone who hasn’t seen it? What is their process? What’s the “big idea” that their work deals with or confronts? What “dominant narrative” is their work challenging? What medium or materials are used? Is there a connection with materials, expression, and meaning? What is that?

These bio paragraphs will feature both cited paraphrasing and cited quotations in MLA style.

(2) Body Paragraphs: Art Analysis (4ish more body paragraphs)

The art piece itself: How does this work of art tell us something about the world we live in?” (Art 21). Consider the concept–the ideas, choices or decisions the artist made to create the work (such as the selection of materials, installation decisions, color or image choices). Why do you think the artist made those choices? What visual, literary and/or historical references do they see in the work (if any!)?
Detailed Description: Using descriptive details, imagine the audience cannot see the image (though I’d suggest embedding it!), and use visual language to describe explicit details: the subject, scale, surprises!
Analysis: Then, add in implicit details, and your own unique ideas on: symbolism, surprises, color, composition, meaning, and ultimately, the message of the work, and how the artist, specifically, reveals the message using their medium and visual expression techniques!

Before the conclusion, close the body section with reflective paragraphs on why you chose the piece, what it means to you, and why the work is significant and relevant today as a protest piece. This answers the “who cares?!” or “why?” question of your three-part thesis argument. Basically, why should your audience care about this issue? Close with a reflection and opinion on why this artist, the issue, and their work matter. Why is this work important now? Please not Google sentences
