Question

After  reading the aritcle, some may argue that the author’s views on parenting are cultural (North American/”Western” parenting styles or lessons that apply to mainly Western societies) and should not be applied to all parenting situations around the world. Based on parenting styles from your home country and the information provided in this week’s reading and listening material, do you agree or disagree with the concept of “trustful parenting” ? Write a coherent paragraph supporting your position and use the evidence from the reading and listening discussed in class as well as your own ideas and experiences (Position-1point, evidence -3 points, own ideas and experiences -2 points)

According to the article by Peter Gray, it is emphasized that the solution suggested based on American sociological and cultural values may not be suitable for every culture. The influence of cultures and social perspectives on parents is significant. Growing up in Istanbul, the most developed city in Turkey, as a Turk, my family has always respected my decisions but also provided guidance and warnings. In my country, children are considered the most precious asset, and their desires are often fulfilled. The parenting styles commonly adopted here are characterized by helicopter parenting and snowplow parenting. Many children do not have to carry their own bags or tidy their beds, resulting in the development of individuals who lack self-sufficiency, constantly rely on support, and seek special treatment. Esther’s approach with her own children is highly appropriate in this context, as children should learn to share responsibilities and tasks from a young age.

Especially in today’s world with the increasing focus on education and awareness, people worldwide should adopt this educational style and respect their children’s individuality. Adora’s family’s approach of supporting her and providing opportunities for self-discovery, such as through books, while refraining from dictating her choices or profession, is commendable. As Peter Gray cautions, we must ensure that our children learn to respect the rights of others just as we respect them. However, it is important to acknowledge that what may be considered ideal or right does not necessarily apply universally. Society greatly influences human behavior and approaches, and being aware of these facts can empower individuals to resist social pressures.
