What do you think some consequences might be of feeling the need both to hide and to reclaim Métis identity?

The interviewer asks, “It’s interesting—your mother sharing the secret, you know, sitting you and your sister down—actually created a series of opportunities for you, for growth if for nothing else, that we forget that others are denied depending on their circumstances.” What does he mean by the comment, “that others are denied”? How does this connect to the concept in the previous question of hiding and reclaiming?

Now, we are going to read a short story by Métis author, Cherie Dimaline. You may be familiar with her widely popular dystopian novel The Marrow Thieves.

Before you read, think about the concept of hiding and reclaiming in association with Métis identity. Look for this theme as you read through the text and think about how this affects the characters in the story.

Read this story: “The Bead Fairy” here is the link:

After reading, think about the detail that Dimaline uses to capture the essence of her characters. We are able to visualize the characters in the story with exact precision because of her personal narrative style and use of characterization. How do some of the elements of Rebecca’s Thomas’ talk on Two Eyed Seeing come through in Dimaline’s story? How is the concept of hiding and reclaiming identity seen in the actions of the characters?

Here is the homework that I need the help on! (this part should be done)!

Due to it’s episodic nature and great use of descriptive language “The Bead Fairy” would transfer well into the perfect short film.

You will make a 10 frame storyboard for a short film version of “The Bead Fairy” that captures the most important events in the story’s plot. A storyboard is like a comic strip that highlights the main events in a plot and allows those involved in movie production to see what the director and producer envision for the finished product

write 10 most important events in the story plot for “The Bead Fairy”. These points will be the 10 frames that will be used to do the storyboard!
