Introducing to paraphrasing.

Para-phrasing means writing a similar phrase that is nearly the same. We do this by substituting some of the words and changing the order of a sentence to make it clearer. It can be difficult to paraphrase longer sentences and paragraphs. It therefore often helps to break them down or”chunk” them into short sentences of one idea. Here is an exercise to give you some practice in this. You may need to use a dictionary.

Exercise A

Find three separate ideas in each of the following sentences and write them in your own words.

Example: Although our human ability to communicate is genetically determined and hence is a part of our biological nature, speech development is importantly affected by the environment.

a) The capacity to communicate is genetic

b) The capacity to communicate is an aspect of our biology

c) Our social surroundings influence how we speak.

1. Learning to talk occurs in similar ways and on similar schedules for all normal children, and differences in training or practice have little effect.

a)

b)

c)

2.Although a bad environment can retard language development, children can learn to speak in any environment where other people speak, but they need a supportive environment to learn to speak eloquently

a)

b)

c)

Nonverbal means of communication can be useful in expressing emotions and feelings, but they are narrower than the verbal system which can express abstract concepts and help in problem-solving.

Exercise B

The next step is to put the “chunked” ideas from Exercise A together in an original way, thus writing each passage in your own words. Remember the four points: use your own words as far as possible; vary sentence structure; don’t change the meaning or leave out important ideas; and don’t add your opinion. Finally, make sure you combine all the ideas in a way that sounds natural and is easy to understand.
