We are learning that the same sound in English can be written using different letters.

I can hear and identify rhyming words when I listen to a story.
I can identify some of the different letter patterns that make the same sounds in written words.
I can read independently and with a partner.

Sheep in a Jeep -Nancy Shaw
Reading
Shared Reading
Lesson sequence:
Read over the children’s book aloud to the class for entertainment. Ask students to participate.
Return to the first page. Ask students to close their eyes and open their ears and listen for words that rhyme or end with the same sound while you read the text.
After the text has been read, ask the students’ comments, and record them on a chart.
Continue with the following pages. The chart will look like as following:
Beep
Sheep
Jeep
Steep
Thud
Mud
Grunt
Front
Steer
Cheer
Sweep
Weep
Yelp
Help
Oh
Go
Choose 1-2 lists and brainstorm other words that sound the same. Add these to the list (see words in blue). Ask students to look for patterns. What do you notice about the rhyming words? Discuss that most rhyming words like sheep/beep and jeep/sheep end with same spelling pattern while oh/go are spelled differently but make the same sound. Underline or write the rime of each word in another colour. (Remember the rime is the end part of a syllable including the vowel and any consonants attached, e.g., the -ay in say)
Students turn and talk about the rhyming words the found
As an extension for the task ask the students to identify and note down the rhyming words in the book, they are reading during independent reading time.
Whole Class Reflection:
Facilitate a collaborative activity wherein the students are encouraged to share any identified rhyming words, which can be subsequently appended to an anchor chart. Discussing the rhyming words that were collaboratively generated with peers. Analyse the vocabulary and clarify any misunderstandings that may exist.
Utilise this as an instrument for observation.
