This discussion is about verifying and cross-checking claims using reputable sources. Below, you will find three claims. Two are true, but one is baseless. Your task is to validate the claims using sources that would be appropriate to cite in an academic paper. The goal is to find a source that people will trust.

For your chosen claims, you will provide the following information:

Information on how you found information on the claim. List a website URL and/or a library database that you used to locate the information.

Name the sponsor or publisher of the website or the source’s title if you found it in a database (in other words, name who is responsible for the site you used, a newspaper, university, government agency, research institute, etc.).

Mention a sentence/paragraph that verifies the claim. Demonstrate information literacy by using quotation marks and attributions. Provide a complete reference for the source. Explain why this would be a reputable source to cite in a college-level research paper.

HERE ARE THE CLAIMS:

Neither Thomas Jefferson nor John Adams signed the Constitution nor attended the Constitutional Convention. Adams served as our representative to Great Britain, and Jefferson represented U.S. interests in France. Both died on July 4, 1826.

A migrant can be defined as a person who decides to move to another country to find a job, pursue educational ambitions, join their family, or for other personal reasons rather than because of an immediate risk of losing life or freedom. As opposed to refugees, migrants do not fear being persecuted or seriously harmed in their native countries. Migrants cannot enjoy the protection of their native state governments.

Together with the health crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic generated an information crisis, often described as an infodemic, that is represented by the spread of fake news, and misguided and false information, especially in the online environment

Tip: if you find a news article that reports on the information, but references an official report as the source for that information, go to the report and bypass the news article. You can use news articles to point you toward reputable studies and reports.
