Navigating Genres

Task: (Please make sure to complete parts 1 and 2.)

1. Part 1: Read Dirk’s essay, “Navigating Genres” (it appears at the bottom of this document), all the way through once.

2. Read a second time, this time glossing the paragraphs or group of related paragraphs (see below for description of glossing).  Since we have a digital copy of this essay, please use the Google comment feature to write your glosses.

3. Part 2: After reading and glossing, make two connections between Dirk’s ideas and   Bunn’s “Reading Like a Writer”

What is Glossing?

“Glossing” is a form of annotation that enables you to enhance your understanding of the things you read.  When you gloss, you are mainly looking at a text paragraph by paragraph.

Why do you gloss?

Looking at these parts can help you to understand how they make up the whole. Your glosses will also help when you need to return to the text to locate specific passages, quotations, or key points that you want to discuss in your essay.

How do you gloss?

You begin by reading a paragraph and getting a general sense of what it says.  You then summarize the paragraph, either by expressing the ideas in the paragraph into a single sentence, giving the paragraph a “headline” as if it were a news story or by writing a strong topic sentence for it.  This can help you get a better sense of what is going on in each paragraph.  It is particularly useful when reading something complicated, or lengthy.

Try it out:

Gloss “Navigating Genres.” You may choose to:

paraphrase in one sentence the main gist of each paragraph
create a headline for each paragraph
create a topic sentence for each paragraph
utilize a combination of three methods

Criteria:

Engage with the reading by including glosses as Google comments throughout the essay-at least 1-2 glosses per page.

Write several (2-4) complete sentences for each connection you make with the other essays we’ve read. Place answers in the yellow boxes.
