The importance of audience, purpose and tone in workplace communication cannot be overemphasized. Knowing your audience and why you are communicating with them is essential. Furthermore, inappropriate assumptions and cultural insensitivity can cost you a job and/or clients.

 

Part 1 (There are 2 sections you need to complete.

Overview:  When you receive or give bad news by email or letter, do you prefer the direct or indirect technique? Clearly state your preference and give solid reasons to support your claims as you respond to the sections below.

1. Review section 3-2c and discuss a scenario from current events or your own experience when it would be more appropriate to use either the indirect or direct strategies. For example, think of college or job acceptance/rejection or employee termination contexts.

2. Read the following note posted in a nail salon and state which strategy you see being used, what its aims are and whether it is effective in achieving its aims.

Tips make it possible for service industry workers to continue to serve you and support their families at the same time. During these challenging financial times, those of you who “tip big” make more of a difference than you could possibly know.
