Social Service Workers must begin to unpack their own internal and/or external prejudices. Reconciliation is an integral part of commemorating the National Indigenous Peoples Day and honoring Indigenous people. Taking steps toward reconciliation as an individual can seem daunting. Reconciliation is not just about apologizing and feeling shame. It is about taking action. It is about contributing to the solution, rather than the problem. It is about engaging in conversations, building connections, listening and sharing experiences. “Avoid appropriation of Indigenous people and take responsibility to practice the Indigenous ways of knowing and helping within the context of social service work by recognizing that everything is connected” (Baskin, Cindy. Strong Helpers Teachings pg. 13 109,)

 

The purpose of this is to engage in a personal act of reconciliation by participating in an activity and answering the questions in the form below. The action you engage in may assist you unpack your internal and/or external prejudices and become a more inclusive Social Service Worker. Review the following link which offers a list of ways to perform personal acts of reconciliation throughout everyday life: Personal Acts of Reconciliation. You may also choose to participate in Georgian College activities such as the “Every Child Matters” campaign. 

 

Instructions: Review the link above with lists of personal acts of reconciliation to engage in and/or participate in Georgian College activities of Truth and Reconciliation. Determine which Call to Action you are willing to commit to try. Develop a plan to engage in a personal act of reconciliation, whether on your own or with others.

 

Answer all of the following questions:

 

What was the action you took? (name the action, when and where and provide the location including website if podcast …)
Define the action you took and explain in detail what it consisted of.
Describe how this action will contribute to your own personal awareness and reconciliation?
Present your personal prejudice and clarify how this action will assist you unpack your internal and/or external prejudices?
