To prepare us for our future writing workshops, it is important for us to get to know each other first.

Introduce yourself to the class. Address the following:

Your professional background
Your personal interests and basic information about who you are, including any “fun facts”
Read the Module One Introduction. What questions do you have about the information there?
Finally, answer the question: What experience do you have with the writing process (pre-writing techniques, planning, outlining, drafting, etc.)? If you have no experience with using a writing process, what questions do you have?
Module One Introduction IS BELOW
How and Why We Write

I hope you are ready for an exciting first week. Just for a heads up, you will be submitting two complete essays this term, in Week 4 and Week 7, with Writing Workshops throughout the course to help you develop as a writer and an editor. Your first essay is a classification essay with planning/prewriting due in Week 2 and a full draft due in Week 3.

That being said, let’s take some time to consider what happens when we write. Writing is so much a part of our daily routine that we do not often stop to think about how we prepare and deliver messages. This class will help you in becoming more aware of how you write and will change the ways in which you view the writing process. Starting this week and throughout this course, you are encouraged to push yourself to think of writing as less of a task and more as a way of exploring the world around you, learning new things, discovering new ideas, and making new meaning.

During this course, we will reflect on our role as writers and on the perceptions and impressions we convey to others through writing. Of course, we will also think about the impact that the audience, or reader, has on a writing task, and we will begin our journey of understanding and applying a range of writing patterns. In Week 1, you will learn how and why we write. In Week 2, we begin developing the 5-Paragraph Classification Essay with prewriting due in Week 2, a draft due Week 3, and a final draft due Week 4. Please review the guidelines here: ENGL118 Overview and Steps – Classification EssayLinks to an external site.

During each week, you will also be reviewing grammar concepts to help you avoid common mistakes and strengthen your writing.

As you start, be sure to first look through all the materials found in the Modules area.
