Important things to remember about persuasive and argumentative essays:
A persuasive research essay reflects your stance on a given topic (this semester it is ‘the GOAT). In this essay, you are asked to not only write to give your reader information (inform), but to affect your reader’s thinking on the issue (argue to persuade). In an argumentative essay, you should anticipate and address the arguments of the other side using facts and logic, without attempting to argue ‘both sides of the issue’. (ex. Federer is the best, but Djokovic may be equally as good – no!)
A good argumentative essay relies very little on the expression of one’s own opinion; it is through the presentation of facts and logic, as well as the writer’s skilled use of persuasive argumentative writing structure that persuasiveness is achieved.
Your Essay Must:
Demonstrate your ability to find, evaluate and incorporate research. Use facts, data, examples, studies, or opinions of other writers to support your thesis.
Source Requirements: Meaningful use of a minimum of 5 reliable, credible sources
Integrate research findings using paraphrasing, quote and signal phrasing.
Be persuasive and analytical. NOT just descriptive or informative
Use objective writing (avoid personal bias and personal opinions), but do mention bias or opinions of others if found
Follow APA 7th edition format
