Good afternoon Daria, I hope you are having a good weekend. The first thing you write about in terms of changes to society is huge because of the amount of drugs those immigrants brought over. The immigrants that came from countries with opium and cocaine brought all of those substances over and caused a bigger drug problem than what was already had. The second point also caught my eye because I had read about that too. Soldiers coming back from the war wounded and in pain was not good, so morphine would be applied to help relieve them of their pain but because of how strong Morphine is, many people became addicted to it especially if they were given the wrong dose by a physician. It is crazy to think how drugs like heroin and barbiturates were seen as safe medicine to use when in reality there was nothing worse than using those to treat people as they are insanely powerful and addicting especially heroin when it is injected into the vein. Ironically doctors back then thought that if heroin was injected rather than swallowed that it would be less addicting, how wrong they were. When it came to musicians, actors, writers, and celebrities using drugs in order to enhance their creativity, I say it would work of course but is it a good idea even if only a little bit of drugs are taken each time, definitely no. I do not believe that anything should be taken in order to enhance any abilities one may have unless it is prescribed meaning one actually needs such substances. Drugs mess with one’s mind and the more they do it the more they will ruin themselves.

Figuring out what drug is the worst is a really difficult issue to answer since, for example, it is dependent on what type of worst-case scenario you are considering. Alcohol and nicotine products are the substances that are used the most often, and because of this, they are also responsible for a significant number of fatalities in addition to a variety of health problems that are the result of continuous use of these drugs or binge-like consumption of alcohol. Right now, in the United States, we have a very deadly narcotic that is fentanyl. Fentanyl is an opioid painkiller that is one hundred times more powerful than morphine. The medication is designed to alleviate severe pain by blocking the brain’s pain receptors and by increasing the synthesis of dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of pleasure. Because of this, the medicine has a significant potential for addiction, much like other opiates. Opioid traffickers have been covertly combining Fentanyl with a variety of other opioids, most notably heroin, in order to improve the drug’s strength and decrease its cost. Heroin is the substance that sees the greatest rise in potency. Tragically, if fentanyl is measured incorrectly, it may quickly lead to an overdose, which can result in death.
According to preliminary statistics from 2022, it was found that a significant majority (68%) of the total recorded drug overdose fatalities in the United States, which amounted to 107,081 deaths, were attributed to synthetic opioids that were not methadone. Specifically, these opioids mostly consisted of illegally produced fentanyl derivatives. (Kariisa et al., 2023) However, although drugs like methamphetamine and fentanyl are exceedingly dangerous for the person who is using them, other substances, such as alcohol and tobacco, are more hazardous for the community as a whole since so many individuals use these substances, and the consequences they produce may be hazardous. Nicotine is a good illustration of this concept. The astonishing mortality rate that may be attributed to smoking is about half a million fatalities per year in the United States alone. Alcohol is another substance that is used by a lot of people, and it may lead to health issues, it can lead to death from an overdose, and it can also lead to individuals getting into dangerous situations or having vehicle accidents because they are unable to drive safely after drinking. Since it is taken by such a large percentage of the population, it is considered to be one of the most harmful chemicals.
