Scenario:

Having just read Drew Hayden Taylor’s essay “Summer of Discontent Revisited,” you have been moved to speak out against ongoing inequality and discrimination in Canadian society, especially as it concerns this country’s Indigenous peoples. You have decided to blog post for the Voices of Youth Blog about (1) the inequality and discrimination you have read about and/or observed in Canadian society and (2) practical ways for your audience to make a difference in their community.

Instructions:

Think about your audience and purpose.

Based on your audience, purpose, and general message, consider what language and tone will be most appropriate for appealing to your readers. Consider how you will support your message and how you can transfer your knowledge about the persuasive appeals and techniques you identified in Drew Hayden Taylor’s essay “Summer of Discontent Revisited.”

r blog post for the Voices of Youth Blog site. Please follow these steps as you develop your blog post:

Provide a title:How can you creatively capture the main idea of your blog in a short phrase?
Provide a “hook”: Acknowledge your audience. How will you meaningfully connect with them?
Establish the problem: What is the situation that you are addressing? Why? Provide some background and real examples. (Examples could be those you have read about or those you have observed or experienced.)
Suggest actions: What specific actions do you suggest to your young audience for helping them to achieve change in their community?
Encourage and inspire: Why are the actions and behaviour of your young audience so important? How will you instill confidence in them and in their abilities to make a difference in their community?

You may dedicate one short paragraph to “steps” b, c, d, e above. In your blog, you should briefly refer to Taylor’s “Summer of Discontent Revisited.” You may also refer to one other class reading from Weeks 9-11 or one article that you have researched. Don’t forget to cite correctly and appropriately and to include a References page at the end.
