Resume and Cover Letter Major Essay #4

Composition II                                                                                               Prof. Hathaway

Are you happy with your current job? What would happen if you had to find a job tomorrow? What kind of job can you get based on your education and experience? Do you have something prepared for perspective employers at a job fair, through a job posting, or through an unsolicited approach?

That’s what you will be working on this week: a resume and cover letter. Your assignment this week is to develop a resume and cover letter for a realistic job based on your education, experience, and skills. That means you should find an entry-level job based around your two-year degree. Do not pursuit jobs that require at least a four-year degree and two years of experience … That’s unrealistic.

Many students may already have a resume developed. If that’s the case, you may want to think about how to make it better.  The skills you learn from composing a resume and cover letter can really help you land a job.

As you are writing your resume, you need the following components:

Your contact information
Job/career objective (focus on what you can do for the organization with your skills)
Education (if you have yet to graduate from HVCC, give the expected graduation date)
Any coursework that may be relevant to the job posting
Work (and volunteer) experience, especially if it is relevant to the job posting
Honors and awards
Additional skills that may be relevant to the job posting

As you are writing your cover letter, you need the following components:

A return address with posted date
An inside address with a specific person (“To whom it may concern is unacceptable”)
An opening paragraph that states the purpose of the cover letter
1-2 body paragraph(s) that cover your education and experience related to that job
A closing paragraph that is suggesting you would like an interview and a “thank you”
A closing with your name and an enclosure (to indicate a resume with this cover letter)

NOTE: When you submit your assignment, include the following:

Cover letter
Resume
Job posting
