Question 1 of 1 | Page 1 of 1Question 1 (1 point)

Select a textbook that aims to help learners improve their proficiency in English. Examine the textbook to determine the goals of the writer of the textbook. As you look through the textbook, answer the following questions. These questions are all related to the topics discussed in this lesson.  It would be a good idea of you worked with another teacher to complete the exercise. Consider dividing up the questions, and when you have prepared your answers, share your responses with your partner.

The title of the textbook: _____________________________________
What level learner is the book intended for (beginning, intermediate, or advanced)?
Does the title of the textbook include any reference to “listening”?
Does the textbook’s author express any intention of helping learners improve their listening skills in English? If so, explain how. If not, explain why you think the author does not mention listening.

Examine the table of contents. Are the topics in the table of contents concrete or abstract ones?

Can you relate the degree of concreteness or abstractness to the difficulty of what the students should learn at their level of proficiency? Remember, we talked about how the degree of abstraction of the information in a message can make comprehension of a message easier (more concrete) or harder (more abstract). What makes the topics in the text appropriate (or inappropriate) for the learners?

Examine the first, the middle, and the last lessons of the textbook. Are the skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) targeted the same for the three parts of the book? Why or why not?
Examine how the author gives the learner practice in developing listening comprehension, if at all.
Is the listening focused on factors inside- or outside-the head of the listener (or both)? What indications in the textbook support your response?
Concerning the factors particular to L2 learners in this lesson, determine which of the factors in the first three chapters are targeted by the author in the exercises. The factors include:
The learner’s self-esteem
The amount of knowledge about the L2 grammar and vocabulary
The degree of socio-cultural competence
The degree of strategic competence
The ability to use cognitive strategies (making an inference, for example)
The ability to use social strategies to help comprehension
The amount of background knowledge needed to comprehend the narratives or conversations in the textbook
