This will level the playing field and provide equal opportunities for all students to succeed in their careers, which will ultimately result in a more equitable society. College tuition is always a struggle to pay in low income families, and those families of minorities. The burden of keeping up with tuition payments and for some of these students, having multiple jobs in order to pay for school and help out around the house. According to HOW COVID-19 EXACERBATES EXISTING INEQUITIES IN OUR FINANCIAL AID SYSTEM, those parents who work to keep their kids in post-secondary education struggle with paying the debt, and in some cases that causes the parents to lose their jobs (Baker, 3). This does not even include how the COVID-19 pandemic has effected the economy, where jobs have constantly been on the low. Most of those frontline and important workers during the pandemic are minorities, who are less wealthy, and have less-formal education under their belt. For example, Hispanic and Black families are on the less wealthy spectrum, with about $40,000 in wealth, while the median wealth possessed by a median White family is around $118,000 (Baker 4).  We need a way of lowering the wage gap in our socioeconomic society, as it is only effecting the students from not being able to finish or even start their higher education. According to Tennessee Is Showing How Free Tuition Community College Works, Tennessee is experimenting a system this past fall where it has allowed high school graduates with the ability to gain free community college through the statewide “Tennessee Promise.” This is letting 60,000 freshman enjoy free community college, which has allowed freshman enrollment to grow by 10 percent through both 2 year and 4 year college systems (Carruthers). This promise helps out families in poverty and those uncertain about their educational career, whether it is because of money or simply because they are unsure what path they want to take. I think the rest of the country can learn from what Tennessee is doing with post-secondary education. By reducing the financial burden on low-income families and removing the barrier to entry for students who may not have had the means to pursue higher education, free college tuition will promote social mobility and contribute to a more robust economy.Arts & HumanitiesEnglish
