Purpose:

Your culminating individual project for the course entails creating a linguistic autobiography in order to get you thinking about how context and personal history contribute to an ecological view of language use and language variation. The purpose of the linguistic autobiography is primarily to help you articulate connections between your own relationship to language use, language learning, and your attitudes about language variation, multilingualism and education. I especially encourage you to reflect on how your beliefs, assumptions, and connections between your experiences and your role as educator were challenged, changed, or reinforced through the course. This assignment will help you develop a clearer picture of your personal linguistic traits and beliefs as well as insight into how those will feed into your role as educator.

Details/Instructions

In this assignment,  will write bout your linguistic experiences and language learning that has shaped how you see yourself and how others see you as well as how you see language and the role of language in education (whichever population(s) you will be serving). As this is a personal reflection and analysis, there is no “correct” version, and you may diverge from perspectives in course readings (but you should relate what you write to readings and other materials).

The following guidelines will help you structure your essay (but you needn’t address these in order or organize the essay according to these as headings):

Your linguistic background
mono- or multi-lingual/dialectal identity
how race, gender, class, and culture shape your language use across contexts
language attitudes you were exposed to growing up
instances where your language use was noticed, praised, criticized, etc.
Your beliefs and assumptions about language use (appropriateness, standardization, variation)
How you believe your language use shapes how you are seen/see yourself/want to be seen
Reflect on how your experiences and beliefs with/about language shapes/will shape your practices and role as an educator
