Please post or upload a thesis and topic sentence outline for paper 1. It should be about 5-8 sentences. Review the lecture for instructions. Below is a model of a thesis and topic sentence outline for option 1.

Example of Provisional Thesis and Topic Sentence Outline for Option 1

Thesis: People often care too much what others think of them, but true creativity can help a person know and love themselves. Both writing and painting can provide roads to self-awareness.

Topic sentence 1: Natalie Goldberg’s concept of “first thoughts,” shows how writing can help a person get in touch with their true feelings.

Topic sentence 2: Goldberg’s explanation of “practice” shows that even though not all writing is good, it is always productive and helpful in getting to know yourself.

Topic sentence 3: My own experience learning to paint has led me to see beauty in things I didn’t notice before.

Topic sentence 4:.Painting has changed the way I look at the world and the way I look at myself.

Conclusion topic sentence: As we can see from both my and Goldberg’s view of creativity, being expressive is a road to inner transformation.

Below is a reminder of the three questions you are supposed to respond to for paper 1. The assignment is to make a topic sentence outline in response to one of these prompts. You may reuse any of this material in your final paper.

Option 1.

In an argumentative essay with an introduction, conclusion, and 3-5 body paragraphs, write an argument that answers the question: How can creative expression (in writing, music, art, etc.) or emotional expression (expressing feelings, asking for help) help a person grow and become more self-aware? (you may define self-aware as resilient, compassionate, flexible, or other qualities you associate with self-awareness).  Use a text from this class and one other example as evidence for your argument. The second example can be your own life, someone you know, a second text from the class, or outside research.
