Introduction #1

Changes from Technology

In 1875, Alaxander Graham Bell invented the first item that would forever impact communication between humans. Since the birth of the telephone, there have been many other advances in technology which have further changed the ways in which we interact. While modern electronics, like the internet and cell phones, have aided in development and progress in the world, one question is raised within my thoughts. Is this high tech life an oxymoron to our existence? Technology may be steadily and rapidly moving forward, but is it causing some of us to regress socially and academically? Although technology provides new age solutions, communication through texting, emails, and social networking sites, it is greatly affecting many social aspects of our generation. Lack of face to face interaction is causing the social skills of society to decrease, social isolation to increase, and may also play a role in affecting our younger generation academically.

Introduction #2

Not Dumb, Just Different

In the documentary “digital_ nation”, Mark Bauerlein, an English Professor at Emory University states, that most English teachers tell him, that they can’t assign novels with more than 200 pages for students to read anymore[1]. This statement is used, amongst other arguments, in his book “The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Age Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future (Or, Don’t Trust Anyone Under 30)”, with which he suggests, that kids nowadays are less academically capable than a couple of years ago, because of technological distractions. However, Bauerlein builds his argument on a very narrow view of what “academically capable” means. Does it count as “being academically capable” when a student is able to read a 200+ pages Shakespeare novel in one sitting and when the student can spell difficult words? Yes it does, but there are other ways of showing “academic capability”, which are more applicable in today’s world, such as thinking in different and diverse ways and creatively solving today’s problems in the world. For that reason, most students nowadays are not less academically capable than five or ten years ago, but different academically capable. Thinking in different and diverse ways is an important skill for solving today’s problems in the world.

1) Based on the introduction, which author made you want to keep reading? Explain why. (Not because you just so happen to personally find their topic interesting. Instead, base this off of the strategies they used.)

2) Which introduction most clearly presented the argument and the relevant background information to understand that argument?

3) Explain how you used research in your own introduction. Aside from using research, which of these other strategies did you apply in your own introduction?
