In this assignment you need to first develop and reflect on your own ethical system and then compare and contrast your own ethical principles and values with the theory of rights. This creative assignment is designed to help you better understand and articulate your own values and principles, whatever they may be, and assess how well your own moral code aligns with one established ethical theory that you engage with in this course: the theory of rights.

This assignment is worth 15 marks. See rubric for the breakdown of your grade.

In the first section of your assignment you need to explain the ethics that guide and inform your daily decisions. Perhaps you’ve never thought about this topic before. If that’s the case, make sure to take some time to think about what values, norms, guidelines, principles matter to you and shape how we establish something as either right or wrong. Marks for this section are given to how well you explain and articulate your own moral code, not on what values/principles you embrace or think shape (or ought to shape) what makes something right or wrong. This paragraph should be at least 8-10 sentences. You can write more, but not less.

In the second paragraph you need list 5 rights that you have and value the most. Do some research. Look up relevant legal documents – i.e., the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Employment Standards Act (labour rights), or any other document relevant to you. Be sure to list why you cherish each right you include in your list and make sure to include which document that right is secured. That is, add the source for each right you include in your list. This paragraph should be at least 7-8 sentences. You can write more, but not less.

In the third and concluding paragraph you need creatively explore what the world would look like if the rights you included in the previous paragraph didn’t exist. Would you be limited in any way? This paragraph should also be around 7-8 sentences. You can write more, but not less.
