Urban Garbage

Imagine leaving your home one morning only to discover that the garbage cans you placed outside had been toppled over by raccoons, spilling smelly, moldy waste covered in maggots onto your lawn.1 What a disgusting, unhealthy mess to clean up!2 Garbage that sits too long when the weather is warm quickly decays and attracts animals.3 In the city, household garbage needs to be picked up on a weekly basis during the summer.4 More regular pickups would diminish the offensive smell, reduce the attraction of creatures, and lessen health concerns.5

First of all, the more often garbage is picked up, the less time there is for it to rot and give off an offensive smell.6 Vegetable peelings, meat waste, and stale bread can quickly decompose.7 When kitchen scraps are exposed to warm temperatures for too long, they mold and create an overwhelming smell.8 Then, when these scraps are moved from the kitchen to the garage, the whole garage can very swiftly stink.9 When an entire neighborhood places their trash outside on the eve of garbage pickup, the breeze can carry a distinctive odor!10 This pungent air encourages those looking for a free meal.11

In addition to dealing with the smell, pesky bugs, insects, and animals find a new home in your household waste as a consequence of the less frequent garbage pickup.12 Ants and cockroaches are attracted to garbage anywhere but particularly in the kitchen.13 The kitchen garbage pail can become a smorgasbord for these troublesome invaders.14 After just a few warm days, the garbage that has been transferred to the garage or shed will be overrun by even more nasty creatures.15 Maggots happily fester in warm, rotting food scraps.16 Furthermore, if that weren’t enough to deal with, raccoons and skunks delight in rooting and digging into outside garbage without a care for the mess they make.17 Racoons are especially creative in finding ways to thwart even the most tight-fitting garbage can lids.18 All of these critters signify the growth of smaller but more threatening organisms.19

Finally, long-standing garbage creates numerous health concerns.20 Microorganisms such as E-Coli and Salmonella grow on spoiled food that sits for too long at room temperature.21 As well, recycling containers that sit outside can contain standing rainwater which attracts mosquitoes.22 Community health agencies routinely warn citizens of the risk of getting bitten by mosquitoes, known carriers of West Nile Virus.23 Add to this the clouds of flies often seen swirling around trash cans.24 Garbage is a breeding ground for flies that are well-recognized as disease carriers.25 All in all, your trash can quickly become a source of illness when it isn’t collected regularly! 26

In conclusion, weekly trash collection in the summer is a necessity of urban life.27 When garbage pickup extends beyond seven days, we are exposed to foul odors, annoying pests, and concerning health hazards.28 Although municipal governments face constrained budgets, aren’t clean and healthy neighborhoods worth a few extra tax dollars?29 No one really wants to face cleaning up old, stinky garbage from their lawn.30
