Here is what I have so far:

Whatever my life experiences have taught me, whether good or bad, I have used them to shape myself into who I am today. My role in my family is twofold: I am the glue that holds it together and the brick wall that separates my immediate family from the family who raised me. The reasons for my aversion to allowing my children to meet certain family members are explained by the fact that when I was a child, my biological father was absent from my life and my mother came and went. I was in several foster homes and spent many days with strangers while my mother got high. Over the years, I have witnessed hundreds of high-level drug users getting high in my living room, along with crimes, and violent behaviors. My roles were shaped by my upbringing.

It is my responsibility to be the backbone and protector of my family, and I consider these my most significant roles. It is my responsibility to care for my home and my children. I am also responsible for instilling traditions and values in them that my children will pass on to their children. In addition to nurturing, teaching, disciplining, and being the primary caregiver, I am a role model, a student, and a nurse

It is through the provision of emotional support, the teaching of values and morals, and the guidance of my children toward their maturity that I nurture my children by developing a sense of responsibility in them and teaching them right from wrong. I have been a disciplinarian by establishing rules, setting boundaries, establishing routines, and ensuring consequences are enforced when necessary. My role as a caretaker has always been vital to my children’s well-being. It is my way to ensure their safety and health. It is also a means of showing them love and demonstrating my commitment to them. Finally, I am a role model for my children. This means that I set an example for them to follow through with my behavior and attitude. In spite of the fact that I miss the mark sometimes, I endeavor to make sure they have the guidance and skills to navigate life.

In addition to my full-time studies, I work full-time as a hospice nurse and remain a PRN nurse in a local emergency room to keep up with my skills. My studies and job responsibilities are often thrown out of sync, so I find myself up late at night doing homework or catching up on my charting for work. While I wish I could say that I’m handling it, most days I barely scrape by, but I don’t have a choice so I keep doing it.
