Homeless

A home is a place where one’s heart feels at peace and comfort. People of different ages and backgrounds are affected by the difficult problem of having to call home. In light of this interpretation of “home”, the author talks about the problem of homelessness. The author, Anna Quimdlen, gives her personal perspective on the issue of homelessness in the essay “Homeless” from the Bedford Reader and highlights the problems and obstacles faced by those who are homeless. In order to effectively address the core causes of homelessness, the author contends that it is important to recognize that the majority of homeless people have complicated, interrelated issues that contribute to their predicament.

Growing up with having a place to call home was a nice thing to have. “Home is where the heart is. There’s no place like it” (Quindlen, 152). The author explains that having a home is a place where a person feels safe, secure, and loved, not just a physical location. The absence of a safe and secure place to call home has an impact on the general well-being and mental health of people without a home which adds challenges and problems to their lives. Homeless people do not understand what it feels like to have a home because most of them live on the street. Many of them are not provided with home due to poverty which makes it difficult for them to have the sense to have a home. The lack of access to this sense of home has far-reaching effects on people’s mental and emotional health in addition to their physical health. For example, when you walked in the street and you see a homeless person you can tell by their physical look that they are not emotionally stable. Sometimes they do nonsense things or say nonsense words because they are mentally stable. This is the reason why being homeless is a psychological and emotional condition as well as a physical one.

Homelessness affects people directly, but it also has broader effects on society as a whole. Along with other problems, homelessness is a factor in rising crime rates, declining economic output, and overburdened healthcare systems. This emphasizes how critical it is to deal with the underlying causes of homelessness and seek to build a society where everyone has a stable and secure place to live. “It has been customary to take people’s pain and lessen our own participation in it by turning it into an issue, not a collection of human beings” (Quindlen, 152). The author examines some of the measures being taken to address the issue, including providing people with safe and affordable housing, supporting them in gaining access to food and other necessities and providing programs for employment and education. Opportunities like these are crucial components in helping people escape homelessness and raise their level of living in this way. The author is trying to emphasize that homelessness is a major problem that needs to be addressed. It needs increased public awareness and support for those affected by it as well as for more resources to be devoted to tackling the problem. Homelessness is a major problem that needs to be addressed.

Some people choose not to be homeless, but owing to events in their lives and a lack of necessities, they end up in this situation. The social stigma of homelessness can make life much more difficult for those who are homeless which is why it’s critical to acknowledge and comprehend the predicament that they are going through. “They are not the homeless. They are people who have no homes” (Quindlen, 153). The author Quindlen emphasizes the need of treating homeless people as human beings rather than referring to them as “faceless” or “nameless.” The difficulties faced by the homeless are much more severe in actuality than they are in people’s perceptions. We should acknowledge that they are still people who occasionally dream rather than treating them with contempt. This serves as a reminder that it’s important to acknowledge the full humanity of persons who are homeless and to recognize them as distinct individuals with their own desires and ambitions. In addition, it’s critical that we respect those without houses, treat them fairly, and acknowledge their humanity.

The essay concludes by acting as a potent reminder of the value of a home and the necessity for society to solve the problem of homelessness. The author talks about home as a place where one feels safe and secure. Since they didn’t have one to begin with, many people lack comprehension of this. Being homeless has never been simple, which is why they should be given the chance to acquire the necessities they require to improve their standard of living, something that many people neglect to recognize. They are not less human simply because they are homeless. These individuals, like us, once had dreams that they were unable to realize due to the current social system. They need to be treated with respect and compassion, just as we would want to be treated.
