Family Obligation is a moral obligation because it is what we have…
Family Obligation is a moral obligation because it is what we have known our whole lives. A moral obligation is somewhat of a requirement to pursue what our parents and family have told us right and how to act right or in the proper way. Family obligations are either good or bad in some peoples eyes or in a society where they don’t see something they are used to seeing then it is ‘weird’ or ‘wrong’.
Obligations are used through out everyones life and one can have one reason as to why it is an obligation but then another can have different perspective as to why it shouldn’t be an obligation. The most important parties to consider are your parents, immediate family , or whoever you have known your life and have been around your whole life. They are the most important to think of because you either live together or they may have had an impact in your life because you trust them or are close to the person and you take advice or you take knowledge on the way they think about a certain situation or opinions.
Kant’s duty theory is about how it is not an obligation to do good for someone or yourself but only if you chose to. I believe that family obligation and Kants duty theory compliment each other because a family obligation is either to take care of an elderly or do everything someone in your family expects you to do. Now with Kants theory it states that if you want to do good don’t let it be because you have to but because you want to and it is coming from good intentions. If someone asks you for help to move something or for money you shouldn’t have to even if you don’t have money after paying bills or something, only when you can. In a way Kants theory does say that you have to ‘obey’ the ‘golden rules’ into being a good person.
Another example is Utilitarianism, this states almost the same theory as Kant but the difference is that Utilitarianism equalizes everyone no matter who you are or what you have. This theory removes the emotional attachment from your decision making in many situations. For example, if you are in a situation where you either help a person in crutches having a hard time using the crutches or a person who is lost and does not know their way around town. Everyone would most likely help the one in crutches because you might feel bad for them and the person who is lost you just might say that they can use their phone or something around them. This is where Utilitarianism comes into separating your emotions from your decision making. Even if you do chose to help the person in crutches they won’t get it right away because it takes time to get used to them, and the person who is lost might be lost for a while and is getting scared or stressed because they can’t find their way. With helping the lost person they will know right away from their mistakes and get the way out.
If we were to make a moral decision into a rule or law even with everyone having different beliefs, I believe it would not work because, even if it is a law or rule you cannot change how a person is or feels deep inside themselves. If we use Utilitarianism then the world would be somewhat better but yet still the same because this theory is that if you don’t want someone to talk bad about you then you don’t talk bad about them first. If the world would understand the meaning of utilitarianism majority of the world would understand then there would be less of the bad and horrid people that there is. In other words, people are still going to be who they want to be, whether or not there is a moral law or rule.
When it comes to my personal responsibility to making ethical decisions, I sometimes stop and think about how other people will be affected by some of my decisions. When I stop and think, I think about how people will react or feel to my decision because then they will not understand where I am coming from. When it is a personal decision I do not stop and think about other people because it is my decision about my life or body and nobody else should know what I chose to do. Thinking about the outcome when making a decision is a big part because if you do not predict the outcome then how are you going to prepare for the situation that is going to happen after the decision. I know I am making an ethical decision because when I stop and think about the outcome and how the people close to me will react. Just by knowing that I am making the right decision not only for myself but for the others around me, I know that I am making a ‘right’ decision.
