The Nurses’ Shortage Crisis

The book being critiqued is “Nursing Shortage,” authored by Lisa M. Haddad, Pavan Annamaria, and Tammy J. Toney-Butler, published under the NCBI Bookshelf.

Upon researching Nurse shortage in the United States, I chose the book “Nursing Shortage” by Haddad et al. to conduct my research paper because it sheds light on the different factors contributing to the nursing shortage crisis.

The book provides an overview of the nursing profession, highlighting the global and national demand for nurses and the projected shortages in the field. It identifies several key factors contributing to the nursing shortage, including the aging population, an aging nursing workforce, nurse burnout, career and family considerations, regional disparities, and violence in the healthcare setting. The book emphasizes the importance of appropriate staffing levels to decrease errors, increase patient satisfaction, and improve nurse retention rates. The introduction of technology such as the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) can also affect nurses staying in the profession. The book suggests that organizations must be creative in meeting the needs of nurses while providing the best and safest care to patients. Empowerment in autonomy in staffing ratio decisions can lead to less burnout and a strong desire to leave the workforce.

Using the CRAAP test, which stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose, this book evaluation will analyze the content of the book titled “Nursing Shortage: Barriers to Recruitment and Retention.”

Currency: The book’s publication date is February 13, 2023, making it a relatively recent source in addressing issues related to the nursing shortage. It also mentions current statistics and projections on nursing shortages in the United States. Therefore, the book is highly relevant to the present needs of healthcare providers, policymakers, and educators.

Relevance: The book focuses on issues related to nursing shortage, including the causes, consequences, and possible solutions. It provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges the nursing profession faces, such as an aging population, an aging workforce, nurse burnout, career and family responsibilities, and violence in the healthcare setting. It also discusses how technology, empowerment, and interprofessional interventions can help to address these challenges. Therefore, the book is highly relevant to anyone interested in understanding and addressing the nursing shortage issue (Haddad et al).
