As you know this is a Critical Thinking class so building your ability to think critically about issues we face in society is the primary focus of this course. The theme of the course is social justice.  So keeping that theme in mind, I want you to analyze the lyrics in Matthews’ song below.

You have had a chance to listen to it, and I am sure that was a serious pleasure, but now we need to delve deeper into what he might have meant when he wrote the lines below. In a minimum 25o word discussion post analyze your take on what the lyrics mean to you. We don’t know what he actually meant because we can’t get in his head, but we do know what the song is generally about, “To change the world” from the first line. Everything after that is open to interpretation, but you cannot change the basic subject matter of the song without going off track in your analysis. That means if you focus your interpretation on an interpersonal aspect, it will not be about changing the world.

“You Might Die Trying”
By Dave Mathews

To change the world
start with one step.
However small
first step is hardest of all.
Once you get your gait,
you’ll be walking tall
You said you’d never dare
Cause you might die trying
Cause you might die trying.
Cause you…
You close your eyes
cause the house is on fire.
You think you couldn’t move
and so the fire dies
The things you never did
Cause you might die trying
Cause you might die trying
You’re as good as dead
Cause you might die trying
Cause you might die trying
If you give (you…give),
you begin to live.
If you give,
begin to live (begin).
You get the world
If you give,
you begin to live.
You get the world.
You get the world.
If you give you,
you begin to live.
You might die trying.
You might die trying.
You might die trying.
The things you never did
cause you might die trying.

You’re as good as dead.
The things you never did.
