The death penalty is discussed at a dinner party hosted by a banker. The banker argues that solitary confinement is torture and not a life worth living. A young lawyer is strongly opposed to the death penalty. Despite the two types of punishment being equally immoral, he prefers life imprisonment as it is vital for survival. In the heat of the moment, the banker bets the lawyer two million rubles that he would not tolerate years of solitary confinement. The lawyer agrees and makes it fifteen years instead of five. Two million rubles are his final reward if he remains in isolation for fifteen years. The lawyer was imprisoned in the garden house of the banker, in complete solitude, only permitted books, music, cigarettes, and wine as companions. His years are spent studying languages, playing instruments, reading books on natural sciences, literature, medical textbooks, chemistry, philosophy, and theology. Only hours remain until the banker sets the lawyer free and pays him two million. The banker has lost most of his wealth and would be bankrupt if he fulfilled the bet. His last remaining wealth is at stake, so he decides to kill the lawyer. He returns to the garden cottage where his prisoner sleeps at three in the morning. When he enters he finds a note from the lawyer and reads it. According to the lawyer, he has been changed by isolation. He rejects freedom, life, and health, along with everything books have taught him. It is common for people to mistake material wealth for meaning, believing it to be a sign of success. By leaving five hours before the agreed deadline, he will renounce the 2 million. As the banker leaves the cottage, he kisses the lawyer’s head, weeps, and leaves. He understands that true success lies in choosing what is meaningful and valuable, not necessarily what is most expensive or desirable. He learns the next morning that the lawyer climbed out of the window and fled. The banker locked the note in a safe.Arts & HumanitiesEnglish
