(29) MICROAGGRESSIONS IN THE CLASSROOM – YouTube

Answer these active viewing questions with 2-3 sentences for each bullet point (unless otherwise specified, the answers are found in the video):

 

1. According to the participants in the video, what is the definition of a microaggression? 

2. Most microaggressions occur frequently in the daily interactions of what group of people?

3.  Most often people who commit a microaggression tend to think of themselves as what? Give one example of a microaggression given by one of the participants and explain why it hurt them. Then, give an example of a time when you experienced a microaggression or when you witnessed/heard about someone else experiencing a microaggression. How did it make you/them feel? (If you can’t think of anything, feel free to do a quick Google search to find other examples/examples from movies, media, etc., and discuss that instead.) 

4. What are the three kinds of microaggressions and what do they mean? Give a real-life example for each one (you can either use an example given by the participants/narrator in the video or come up with one yourself). 

5. What does someone mean when they say they are “colorblind”? Why is it problematic when someone says they are “colorblind”?  

6. How can microaggressions in the classroom harm a student’s ability to succeed academically in that classroom?

7. What are some common microaggressions committed by instructors in the classroom? 

8. What are some common microaggressions committed by instructors in the classroom? Why are these microaggressions hurtful to students?

9.Think of the people that Victor Rios interviewed in the article “Hyper-Criminalization” Download “Hyper-Criminalization”. Give an example of a microaggression that one of them faced and explain why it impeded their ability to succeed in life (if you can’t find one in the article, think of one of the microaggression mentioned in the video and explain which one was most likely experienced by one of the people from the article).
