2. In this course you learned about different forms of direct, indirect, and nonfinancial compensation. Consider your own career. Which of these types of compensation is most important to you? Do you believe the same form(s) of compensation would be most important to those you will directly manage? Explain your answer.
3. Some HR managers believe their younger workers are increasingly aware that a company’s care for the environment is often reflected in its care for its employees. As a result, companies espousing genuine commitment to sustainable, or “green,” practices tend to attract a more committed and, as a result, higher-quality staff. Would you agree with these managers? Explain your answer.
4. Some forms of undesirable employee behavior are so serious that they warrant immediate termination, despite the existence of a progressive disciplinary program. Examples could include on-the-job fighting or intoxication. Consider the case of theft by an employee. Should such behavior result in the use of progressive discipline, or should it always result in immediate termination? Would the item or dollar amount taken by the employee affect your decision? Why or why not?
5. Assume you are a unit manager in a hospitality organization and that a talented young assistant manager reporting to you approached you and confessed that he was struggling with a substance abuse problem. The employee also states that he wants help from the company’s EAP to overcome it. Assume also that, previously to this, your evaluation of the employee was that he was ready to assume responsibility for his own unit.
