1.How would you describe the way vision was used at Mentor Graphics? – can someone make it 700WORDs for this?

With the context of Mentor Graphics’s past, I would describe it as evolving, adjusting, and fitting. The text has proved that the role of vision has changed and evolved. This demonstrates that not all changes are negative, as they can also lead to the improvement of the company.

It began with an undefined goal to “Build Something That People Will Buy,” which was eventually replaced by the goal to “Beat Daisy” as the company struggled to survive in its early years. As a response to growth issues, a new vision based on “Six Boxes” was developed; however, this new vision resulted in setbacks in the ability to make reasonable financial decisions. It was decided to set up a new vision and call it the “10X Imperative,” but customers found it far too ambiguous and uncertain. Then, the ultimate vision, “Change the Way the World Designs Together,” was ambitious but had

little to do with the company’s core activities. In the end, the company returned to a more realistic vision that harkened back to its humble beginnings: “Our current short-, medium-, and long-term vision is to build things that people will buy.”

Mentor Graphics’ history proves that a vision can happen in the midst of transition and changes, and can form ideas from the realities of the business environment. It also highlights the fact that if the vision is not aligned with the company’s actual activities, it may become irrelevant.

Furthermore, I can say that visions aided growth and market leadership in some cases, but also hindered sound financial decisions and agility. Therefore, vision’s role in this case can be seen as a combination of both a driver and a hindrance of change. The leader’s role in developing and communicating the vision has also evolved over time, shifting from a hands-on to a more directive approach.
